More than one-third of the gold in Germany and Italy is stored in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York

2025-06-30

Finally, some people in Europe have come to understand that if the gold stored in the United States is not transported back soon, the consequences may be unimaginable.

Recently, some in the European political circle have advocated repatriating the European gold stored in the vaults of the United States and have made demands to the governments of Germany and Italy on this matter.

It should be noted that both Germany and Italy have considerable gold reserves. The former has 3,352 tons and the latter has 2,452 tons, both ranking among the top in the world. However, more than one-third of the gold in both countries is stored in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

According to calculations, the total value of gold stored by Germany and Italy in the United States exceeds 245 billion US dollars. There is no doubt that this wealth is an astronomical figure.

In this regard, some Europeans want to change this situation.

Some German politicians have emphasized that no “shortcut” can be taken in protecting the country’s gold reserves, especially in the current situation where geopolitical risks are intensifying. Therefore, the gold reserves belonging to Germany and Italy need to be brought back to Europe from the United States.

It’s not incomprehensible that they would have this idea. After all, a series of recent events have been enough to stir up the anxiety in their hearts.

The first is the intensification of geopolitical risks mentioned above. Recently, due to the explosive changes in the situation in the Middle East, the price of gold has risen because of its safe-haven function.

For some Europeans, the feeling that their wealth has increased but is not in their own hands might make them feel quite uncomfortable.

Although the latest news indicates that Iran and Israel have reached a ceasefire agreement. But everyone is clear that the contradictions in the Middle East will not just disappear like this; instead, they may accumulate more and more. The next outbreak might be even more difficult to handle.

Out of concern for the uncertainty of the future, it is best to keep one’s own assets in one’s own hands.

Secondly, Trump’s attack on the Federal Reserve has raised more concerns among the outside world about the future economic policies of the United States.

Since taking office, Trump has been demanding that Federal Reserve Chair Powell accelerate the process of cutting interest rates, but the latter has been slow to act. This made Trump extremely angry and he even threatened to fire Powell at one point.

Every move of the Federal Reserve not only concerns the economy of the United States, but also has an impact on the global economy. For a long time, the Federal Reserve has maintained a relatively independent position and endeavored to keep its policies stable and predictable to ensure market confidence.

Precisely because of this, Trump’s attempt to exert influence on the Federal Reserve has not only worried the domestic market in the United States but also the global market.

All parties have come to recognize that Trump’s style of doing things not only highlights an unpredictability but also sometimes is extremely lacking in professionalism. If he eventually succeeds in exerting influence on the Federal Reserve and even makes the Federal Reserve act under his baton, there will be a big problem.

Under an unstable economic outlook, having more gold at hand for the country can undoubtedly enhance the confidence of the people and the market as much as possible.

Thirdly, Trump’s handling of the Fort Knox Vault might arouse suspicion among some Europeans.

Perhaps everyone still remembers that Trump once loudly sent Musk to thoroughly investigate the gold reserves at Fort Knox, the largest vault in the United States. At that time, they acted with great certainty, claiming that the exact amount of gold inside would be known just by opening the door and taking a look.

However, several months have passed, and even Musk has been kicked out of the Trump team. The so-called inspection of the Fort Knox Vault seems to have sunk into the sea. Although the outside world cannot confirm with certainty that Trump has given up on this matter, it is quite normal to have some speculation and doubts.

Did Trump stop mentioning this matter simply because he lost interest? Or did you find something that shouldn’t have been checked? Different answers are obviously worlds apart.

Seeing this situation, it is indeed understandable that some Europeans have a decline in trust in the United States.
