2025-08-06

On the 5th, Seoul, South Korea, the vegetable area of a large supermarket.

Last year, due to factors such as high temperatures and heavy rain in summer, the wholesale price of cabbage in South Korea once soared to 8,900 won (46.3 yuan) per tree, and was called “golden vegetable” by the media. In order to prevent the “golden vegetable” crisis from happening again, the South Korean government has invested 35,500 tons of cabbage reserves to the market.

Faced with uncertainty in the harvest and price of cabbage, the demand for Chinese kimchi in the Korean catering industry has been increasing. Currently, almost all kimchi imported from South Korea come from China. Data from the South Korean Customs Department shows that in the first half of this year, the import volume of kimchi was US$93.79 million, an increase of 11.2% year-on-year. If the current trend is based on the current trend, it is expected that the import volume for the whole year will break a historical record.

In addition to watermelon and cabbage, the prices of radish, peach, eggs, chicken, etc. have also increased significantly. In response, the South Korean government has introduced measures such as issuing consumption coupons and providing farmers with technical guidance on anti-high temperature and production protection, in order to stabilize prices.
