PBC Conducts 500‑Billion‑Yuan MLF Operation to Maintain Ample Liquidity and Stabilize Bank Credit Supply

2026-08-25

On August 24, the People’s Bank of China issued an official announcement stating it would carry out a 500‑billion‑yuan one‑year Medium‑term Lending Facility (MLF) operation on August 25, keeping the operation rate unchanged. The move aims to keep banking‑system liquidity at a reasonably sufficient level and support credit expansion for the real economy. This large‑scale MLF injection offsets maturing capital, supplies long‑term funding to domestic banks and eases pressure on lenders’ liability sides, which helps steady lending to enterprises and households.

Domestic economic recovery is still underway, while real‑sector financing demand requires further strengthening. As a key long‑term liquidity instrument, the MLF directly improves banks’ medium‑and‑long‑term capital sources and incentivises financial institutions to increase credit support for manufacturing, micro‑and‑small enterprises, green industries and consumption‑related sectors. Market institutions interpret that keeping the MLF rate unchanged shows the central bank maintains a prudent monetary‑policy stance for now. There will be no aggressive interest‑rate cuts; the priority is liquidity backstopping to keep market interest rates moving smoothly.

Market participants are closely watching the upcoming Loan Prime Rate (LPR) quotation. Improved bank funding costs may create room for future declines in real‑world loan rates. The central bank will also deploy open‑market reverse‑repo tools to fine‑tune short‑term capital conditions and smooth money‑market volatility.

Analysts point out that monetary‑policy effects need coordination with fiscal and industrial policies. Liquidity injection alone cannot fully drive domestic demand. Sustained implementation of consumption‑boosting and investment‑stabilising supporting measures is required to consolidate the upward economic momentum. The central bank will keep observing real‑economy financing conditions, and adjust policy tools in a targeted way according to evolving macro‑economic data.
