ETF Scale Volatility and Refined Capital Trading

2026-09-15

The A-share ETF market has experienced fluctuating scale movements in 2026, ushering in a new round of sector adjustments. Data shows that the total market ETF volume stood at 6.02 trillion yuan at the end of last year. Affected by market swings, the figure dropped sharply to 4.75 trillion yuan by the end of June, a decline of more than 20%. In the second half of the year, market style rotation accelerated, and incremental capital kept flowing in. By early September, ETF rebounded to 4.9 trillion yuan, staging a phased recovery.

This sharp swing mainly stems from the pattern of large capital inflows and outflows. Retail investors and quantitative funds frequently conduct band trading, pushing up short-term ETF turnover rates. The traditional static operation model can no longer adapt to market rhythms. The old logic of prioritizing scale expansion has faded. Refined risk control and liquidity management have become core priorities for public fund institutions.

Meanwhile, sector divergence keeps widening. ETFs covering new energy metals, advanced manufacturing and AI technology continue to attract capital. Leading public funds have filed new theme ETF products one after another, expanding product supply. In contrast, broad-based and cyclical ETFs face sustained capital outflows, with funds concentrating on high-quality niche tracks.

Industry insiders note that ETFs have evolved beyond simple index investment tools and become key indicators of market style shifts. Going forward, competition will shift from scale races to comprehensive comparisons of product quality, trading services and risk management capabilities. Refined operation will remain a long-term trend for the ETF sector.
