European Shipping Futures Surge Sharply

2026-09-28

On September 28, China’s shipping futures market staged a strong rebound. The main Europe container shipping contract surged by over 8% intraday to 2968 points, hitting a recent stage high and reversing the previous weak consolidation trend, signaling a rapid upturn in the shipping industry’s prosperity.

The sharp rise in container freight rates is driven by multiple favorable factors. On the demand side, the upcoming year-end consumption season in Europe and the US has stimulated concentrated stocking demand from cross-border e-commerce and traditional foreign trade enterprises, driving a steady increase in cargo volume on European routes and improving port operation efficiency, which effectively absorbed excess shipping capacity. On the supply side, global capacity regulation on major shipping routes continues to advance, with accelerated dismantling of old vessels and slowed delivery of new capacity, optimizing the industry’s supply-demand balance.

Fluctuations in international bunker fuel prices and recurring port congestion in overseas regions further pushed up freight rates. After a long period of low freight rates, container shipping companies have eased operational losses with improving profit expectations. Institutional analysis indicates that the fourth quarter is the traditional peak season for shipping. Supported by seasonal demand, geopolitical logistics disturbances and capacity optimization, European freight rates will maintain a fluctuating upward trend. The performance of listed shipping enterprises is expected to improve steadily alongside the rising freight rates, with sustained attention needed on overseas demand recovery and capacity adjustment rhythms.
