China-US Reaches Consensus on $30 Billion Tariff Reduction

2026-09-29

On September 29, major progress was made in China-US economic and trade relations. Under the framework of the China-US Trade Council, the two sides reached a consensus on reciprocal tariff reductions covering $30 billion worth of goods and confirmed detailed product lists. The breakthrough sends a strong positive signal for bilateral trade recovery and benefits a wide range of Chinese export enterprises.

Under the agreed framework, the US will lower tariffs on Chinese consumer goods including toys, home appliances, maternal and infant products, kitchen and bathroom equipment, and festival supplies, covering a total trade volume of $30 billion. China will implement reciprocal tariff reduction measures based on domestic industrial interests and market demand. The tariff adjustments focus on livelihood consumption and light manufacturing sectors, which are high-volume and highly correlated core categories in bilateral trade, fully catering to market supply and demand.

Although detailed implementation rules are yet to be released, many listed export enterprises have actively aligned with the new policies to adjust production capacity and expand overseas sales channels. For China’s traditional export sectors such as light industry and home appliances, tariff cuts will directly reduce export costs, enhance the global competitiveness of Chinese products, ease operational pressures, and drive the recovery of overseas orders and capacity utilization. The reciprocal tariff reduction model balances the industrial interests of both countries, stabilizes bilateral trade expectations, eases trade frictions, and injects stability into global trade. Industry insiders expect relevant export industrial chains to usher in a phased recovery as the formal rules take effect.
