Electric Trucks Undercut Diesel Trucks in European Total Cost

2026-09-29

Latest European market data released on September 29 confirms a critical turning point for the new energy commercial vehicle industry. Electric trucks have achieved a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than traditional diesel trucks in Germany, the Netherlands and other European countries, marking the start of large-scale popularization for commercial vehicle electrification.

Industry reports show that the premium purchase cost of electric trucks in Dutch and German markets can be fully offset by lower energy consumption and maintenance costs within two years. Over a 5-year service cycle, mainstream electric truck models can save up to 100,000 euros in the Netherlands and 85,000 euros in Germany compared with diesel trucks, presenting an overwhelming cost advantage. Meanwhile, Europe’s photovoltaic industry is booming, with Germany’s solar power generation volume already exceeding the full-year figure of last year. Sufficient clean energy supply further reduces the daily operational energy cost of electric commercial vehicles.

Driven by continuous new energy policies, falling clean energy electricity prices, iterative battery technology and mass production of new models, Europe has completely reversed the cost disadvantage of electric commercial vehicles. Previously, high purchase prices slowed the penetration of electric trucks compared with new energy passenger cars. The arrival of the TCO turning point will accelerate electrification replacement in logistics, freight and municipal transportation scenarios. Industry forecasts indicate that the penetration rate of electric trucks in Europe will surge in the next two years, bringing new overseas market opportunities for Chinese commercial vehicle exporters and speeding up the global new energy transformation of the commercial vehicle industry.
