Samsung Electronics Faces Severe Labor Disputes, Non-Chip Departments Sue to Block Salary Agreement

2026-05-26

On May 26, 2026, severe internal labor disputes broke out at South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics. The trade union of non-chip departments officially filed an injunction application with the court to block the implementation of the company’s new salary agreement. The core of the conflict lies in the unfair salary and bonus distribution mechanism. To reward the outstanding performance of the chip business, Samsung Electronics plans to issue a special bonus of up to 600 million Korean won to chip department employees. However, employees in non-chip sectors such as consumer electronics, home appliances and communication equipment have not received substantial additional benefits, triggering strong dissatisfaction and internal division within the company. After years of rapid growth in the global semiconductor industry, Samsung’s chip business has become the company’s core profit pillar, while the consumer electronics business has faced sluggish growth and intensified market competition. The differentiated bonus policy aims to incentivize high-profit business departments, but it ignores the reasonable demands of other employees, breaking the balance of internal employee benefits. At present, the labor negotiation has fallen into a deadlock. In addition to employee protests, minority shareholders have also raised objections, pointing out that the large-scale special bonus plan has not passed shareholder review, with obvious compliance loopholes and operational irregularities. Industry analysts warned that the continuous internal disputes will affect Samsung’s production stability and employee morale, bringing uncertainties to the company’s global production capacity arrangement and annual operating performance. If the dispute cannot be resolved in the short term, Samsung’s global market share in consumer electronics and semiconductor fields may face certain impact.
